In this episode of Podiatry Marketing, Jim McDannald, DPM, and Tyson Franklin share 21 video ideas that aren’t directly about foot problems but still help market a podiatry clinic by building trust and familiarity.

Tyson suggests filming behind-the-scenes content such as orthotic cover gluing and materials, orthotic adjustments, equipment servicing, wax foot bath setup, instrument sterilization and autoclave processes, tools and blade types, treatment room prep and cleaning products, and practical patient guidance like car parking directions, online booking tutorials, and navigating the clinic website. They also recommend introducing team members on video, giving a full clinic tour (including technology like milling machines), and creating seasonal or event-based videos like decorating for Christmas or the Olympics, emphasizing using the right platforms and timing.

Jim McDannald, DPM:

You're listening to Podiatry Marketing, conversations on building a successful podiatry practice with Tyson Franklin and Jim McDannald. Welcome back to Podiatry Marketing. I'm your host, Jim McDannald. Join us always with my trusty co host, Tyson Franklin. Tyson, how's it going today?

Tyson E. Franklin:

Fantastic day, big Jim. It's good to be back on here for another Podiatry Marketing episode. And we're now up to 250 something.

Jim McDannald, DPM:

Yeah. It wasn't so long ago we we celebrated number two fifty. That's a pretty exciting thing to to be a quarter away to to a millennia. So, you know, we're just just moving right along.

Tyson E. Franklin:

Yeah. Well, I remember when we hit a 100, and that seems so long ago that we hit a 100. Then remember we did the 200. Two fifty not that long ago. Now the year would be 300, and, yeah, it's just...

Tyson E. Franklin:

And what I'm what I'm enjoying about doing this is, you know, if people think of it logically and they will be... And this part of what I'm gonna talk about today... Well, the topic I'm gonna talk about today is... I'm just gonna find where where I put it. Oh, here we go.

Tyson E. Franklin:

21 video ideas that are not related to foot problems. Because a lot of people will sit and go, I don't know what what I should shoot as a video or what can I share? So I'm gonna share 21 things that are not foot related. But imagine saying to people, what I want you to do is sit down and come up with 253 ideas to do a podcast about Podiatry Marketing. Yep.

Tyson E. Franklin:

We push ourselves every week and we come up with something.

Jim McDannald, DPM:

Yeah. Yeah. It's it's funny, though. I think it helps that nothing stands still. Right?

Jim McDannald, DPM:

Everything's always changing. So, obviously there's tried and true methods and ways to look at things, the technologies, the channels, the way of doing things, there's always a little bit of a nuance or sometimes it's helpful to repeat ourselves in some different formats or some different ways that can be helpful to our audience.

Tyson E. Franklin:

Yeah. I remember someone saying to me once, might've been at a conference, and they go, oh, I thought about getting a business coach, but I'm not sure. How could you help me? Yeah. My business is already going okay.

Tyson E. Franklin:

How could you help me? And we had a bit of a discussion. I went away, it came back home, and I was going through some of my coaching notes from other clients and I I was just noting that headlines of different things. And there was probably about 350 different things, different topics that we had discussed over the last ten years of different coaching clients. And that made me think, okay.

Tyson E. Franklin:

There's 350 different ways that I know I could actually help you as a business coach or things that we could touch on. And this is exactly the same. I think when it when it comes to coming up with ideas for Podiatry Marketing, a lot of it is something that you've spoken about with someone recently or something you've seen on a webinar or you may have heard on another podcast and you go, there's another idea.

Jim McDannald, DPM:

Absolutely. I totally agree there.

Tyson E. Franklin:

So it's endless amounts. So I'm gonna I'm gonna dive into this, Jim. I'm gonna I'm gonna rip into the first one. Some of these, some people will go, oh, that's just obvious. And I'm thinking, well, if it's obvious, then do it.

Tyson E. Franklin:

Don't. You can't complain. So the first one is what you... I think what you wanna do is give patients a bit of a glimpse into sort of what happens what what happens behind the scenes. I think a lot of patients get excited to...

Tyson E. Franklin:

You might think what you do day in, day out is really boring, but there's a lot of things that you do that I think patients would find interesting. So the first one is how do you glue your covering materials? And and even going as far as the type of glue that you use. Why do you use that particular glue when you're putting a cover on your orthotics? That's if you do your own.

Tyson E. Franklin:

If you don't do your own, it's gonna be really hard to shoot a a video on that. Simple topic. Don't you reckon that's a simple topic, Jim?

Jim McDannald, DPM:

No. It's super simple, but I think you said, like, showing instead of always kind of like putting text or, you know, even like blog posts. Obviously, those can be helpful, but when people can see the behind the scenes, it makes them feel, you know, more confident. It shows your expertise. There's a lot you can do when you're you're showing it and and instead of just telling people.

Tyson E. Franklin:

Yeah. The the second video you could do is the the different covering materials that you use. You might use pour on. You might use vinyl. You might use leather.

Tyson E. Franklin:

You might use something else. You can shoot the video on the different materials, but then you could also extend that video by talking about why you choose one particular covering covering material than another. What... When do you put pour on on compared to when you would use vinyl or when would you use leather? There's different situations and different types of orthotics that you're making that could actually change it.

Jim McDannald, DPM:

No, absolutely. I think it's helpful to show the thought process of what you're doing to patients. And obviously, if they're curious, you you could even mention that you have a video that discusses why, you know, why you decided to go with vinyl over leather or something. So it definitely makes a lot of sense to me.

Tyson E. Franklin:

Yeah. The next video you could shoot is different orthotic adjustments because there's a lot of adjustments that we do. And it could be... You could do a video on how you adjust an orthotic to fit into certain types of footwear. It might be how you apply a met dome, how you work out where it's gonna go.

Tyson E. Franklin:

Now, if you're... You could do one on making a met dome if you actually make them yourself. Like, if you buy them in premade, then you're gonna do that. But if you actually make them yourself, which I used to do, I used to love just taking a piece of rubbish, grinding it. And I used to always jokingly say to someone, a new person that was working with me, okay, have a look at this.

Tyson E. Franklin:

I want you to learn how to make these. I know it looks like it was made by a machine. I said, that is because I am a machine.

Jim McDannald, DPM:

You put some pro in... Pro arch podiatry. I

Tyson E. Franklin:

did. I used to just say, I know. It looks like it's made by a machine. It's because I'm a machine. And they'd have a bit of a chuckle.

Tyson E. Franklin:

But... Anyway... And I just thought it was always a good skill to have. And the reason I usually teach them how to do them was because it just taught them how to get good on a grind. If you could make a met dome, there's a lot of other adjustments you'd learn to do as well.

Tyson E. Franklin:

But these are videos that you could easily do. You could do videos on servicing different types of equipment you have in your clinic. I know when we had the shockwave machine, other than the handles had to get serviced, you had to send them away. But the actual machine itself, we used to have to pull apart every now and then and change different things in there and add... Yeah.

Tyson E. Franklin:

Change seals and oil and and dip parts. So if you've got other equipment, is show them how you actually service that equipment, especially if it's something that, you know, the patients see on a regular basis. Preparing for a wax foot bath. How is a wax foot bath actually set up? It's not just...

Tyson E. Franklin:

Then you can shoot a video on how to actually do a wax foot bath. Did you ever do wax foot bath, Jim?

Jim McDannald, DPM:

I never did. No. It's not something that we did in The States.

Tyson E. Franklin:

I tell you, it's it's one of the... Especially here in Australia, it's one of the simplest things to set up. It's one of the simplest things to explain to a patient what medical grade paraffin Waxful Bath is and how good it is for certain certain patients. And even here in a show, if people are in health funds, it's covered under health funds. It's covered through veteran affairs.

Tyson E. Franklin:

It's a piece of equipment and it's a service that I think you should have set up because it's a simple way to actually adding another string to your bow, but also you can generate income from it.

Jim McDannald, DPM:

Very cool. You have to look into that.

Tyson E. Franklin:

Okay. Number six, preparing instruments for sterilization. So it could be using an ultrasonic cleaner, how that works, scrubbing the instruments and getting it prepared, bagging instruments. And you could even explain how the autoclave works, why you have it running at a certain temperature. You could show the instruments going in there.

Tyson E. Franklin:

You could show the instruments coming out. Just that that whole side of things. One, I think patients will find it interesting, but also it lets patients realize that you do actually sterilize your instruments. That's why when they arrive, you're taking them out of bags and it's a it's a very sterile environment. And just for their own safety, I think that's something that they would be actually interested in seeing.

Jim McDannald, DPM:

I think that's huge. I think it's a it's a huge trust builder. But I think that sometimes, you know, they've gone to a pedicurist or a foot spa or something that doesn't have that level of, you know, sterilization. Obviously, they should. But, you know, when they when they understand the steps you're going through to keep them safe and to keep them healthy, I think that's a great way to showcase your expertize and to show the kind of care that you can provide.

Tyson E. Franklin:

Especially, yeah, when you're comparing it to they go to some of these nail salons and they're pulling things out of some colorful liquid. Yeah. Wiping it wiping it down the towel and then using it. Yeah. So the...

Tyson E. Franklin:

Another video is what is a black file and what is it used for? Or another one I've got here is different sized scalpel blades. They're different numbers. What... And what you actually use each of those scalpel blades for.

Tyson E. Franklin:

It's not just a scalpel blade. You'll choose a 15 over a 10 compared to 11 depending on what it is you're you're actually trying to do. The difference between normal toe... Toenail clippers and, like, Thwaites nail clippers, something you might use for nail surgery. Explain the flat base and the and the sharp...

Tyson E. Franklin:

Or the sharp top. And I think patients just seeing that, it gives them a bit more of a glimpse into it's just not a a pair of clippers. You can even do a a video on your car park. If you have a car park, do a video. Hey.

Tyson E. Franklin:

This is where a car park is. This is where you're parking. This is where the back door is. Or if you wanna walk around to the front entrance, you could do a video on the cleaning supplies you use for your floors and why you choose those over other cleaning products. Or how your treatment room is prepared for each consultation.

Tyson E. Franklin:

It's not that it just doesn't happen by itself. There's usually cleaning, there's preparation before getting a treatment room ready.

Jim McDannald, DPM:

Now I like that, especially the just going back to the car park portion. I think that's really valuable stuff that obviously you can make a video from the patient's perspective. So, you know, whether it's on your Google business profile or it's on your website, they can feel like they've already kind of entered your clinic in a way and they don't feel lost. I know that sometimes people have standalone offices and that's great, but sometimes there's a shared office or it's in an office park and sometimes, you know, not knowing where to park and kind of which building to go into, it can be a bit disorienting for for certain types of patients. If there's, you know, a video online that shows where the car park is, know, where they enter the clinic, where they take a right, if they go upstairs or an elevator, those things are really valuable.

Jim McDannald, DPM:

And I think that's one thing that I think can be really beneficial, like I said, on a Google Business profile or even on like a information about the clinic page on the website that can really provide more familiarity so they can feel confident going into your clinic.

Tyson E. Franklin:

Yeah. I had to pick up something yesterday from this particular business, and they had a car parking area there. One, it was almost like an optometry test test to try and find their sign. My god. I drove past it three or four times and when I eventually...

Tyson E. Franklin:

I said, you know what? It has to be around here somewhere because I know that's number 78 and this is number 74. They said there was 76, so it has to be here somewhere. It's just a little sign They had this little 76. And that's all I had there.

Tyson E. Franklin:

I went, unbelievable. But anyway, some other video ideas, your daily routine and how you prepare for your patients each day. What is it that you do to actually get ready for the day? Or your end of day routine. How do you end your day?

Tyson E. Franklin:

What what is it you do at the end of day to actually complete everything? Another one, what is semi compressed felt and how do you use it? Did you use semi compressed felt much, Jim?

Jim McDannald, DPM:

Yeah. Used that for some kind of temporary orthotics for, you know, when you're maybe someone had a, you know, sent out an orthotic but you just then you did something relatively temporarily so I'd use some semi compressed felt to do that with some patients kind of early on actually I think I had some when I was you know using that kind of felt in an orthotic standpoint.

Tyson E. Franklin:

I like the way you say semi. We call it semi. It's semi. It's like when we say anti inflammatory, we'll go anti inflammatory, isn't it? Anti inflammatories?

Tyson E. Franklin:

Anti inflammatory. Anyway, moving right along. Yeah. I used to use it a lot as well. So another video, your treatment chair or bench.

Tyson E. Franklin:

And why did you choose that particular design? Because we used to have we used to have treatment benches, and we used to have treatment chairs, and we chose different brands based on what we were actually doing. And some of the treatment benches, far better for biomechanical examinations, easy for patients to get on and off depending on who they were, whereas some of your chairs, way better suited for routine foot care because it had more movability, had armrests that was safer for some of your elderly patients getting off and on. That's the type of video that patients would go, never realized you actually put that much thought into it.

Jim McDannald, DPM:

I bet that's the kind of video that actually would benefit younger podiatrists as well. Know, like before they're outfitting their treatment rooms and their clinics just to have that perspective because sometimes maybe they were in the clinic and they didn't really think about that too much, but I could see where that could have been useful when I was a little bit in my younger days.

Tyson E. Franklin:

Yeah. Like, we used to... In some of our clinics just had the examination benches, didn't have any armrests or anything on there. And people would say, what happens if you love old people? I said, well, they'll fall off the other side.

Tyson E. Franklin:

But... No. I didn't. I did. Sorry.

Tyson E. Franklin:

I... We never did that. We we didn't didn't. We'd hold them. We'd strap them in to make sure they didn't fall out.

Tyson E. Franklin:

But it is... If if you're having... That's why some... Well, I know some people work for my doctor surgeries in Australia and it'll just be examination benches. No armrests.

Tyson E. Franklin:

That is something you really have to pay attention to. If you're dealing with a lot of older people, you've got one, you gotta get them up on there. But if there's no armrest, it can sometimes be a little bit unsafe, especially for people with with... If they don't have the best balance of getting in and out. So just, yeah, I think that is a good idea is you would find for younger podiatrists, really think about the type of bench you're gonna use.

Tyson E. Franklin:

The seventeenth thing I had here on the list was your online booking system and how simple it is to use. Actually, have a video on your website that says, this is how our online booking system works. And they can just click through it, and they can see how simple it is. Because if it's not simple for you to actually record how that happens, then maybe you need to think about the actual process.

Jim McDannald, DPM:

Yeah. What seems sometimes simple either to you or to your staff may not be to that, you know, six year old patient or that seven year old patient who's... If you don't have an option or doesn't have a clear phone number, if they end up in your online booking system, you're having kind of a quick tutorial, you know, a link to a video there could be a a huge help.

Tyson E. Franklin:

Yeah. There was something I was looking at, must have been yesterday, and it was just about simplicity and and how things work. And it was exactly what you said. Sometimes something that just seems so obvious to us is not obvious to other people. And and I think that's where a lot of these...

Tyson E. Franklin:

Like, where these videos can sometimes be handy, especially instructional videos on how to do things. Because we do the same thing day in day out. It just seems so simple. But for someone who's never either used that service before, it it it could be a real eye opener for... Like the car parking.

Tyson E. Franklin:

If you're thinking about going somewhere to get an... You're having an appointment, if there was a video where where you were making the appointment, if there was a video that's just showing you where to park, even if it was just instructions and not a video, it does make it a lot easier, especially if you're in a a busy, a high traffic area.

Jim McDannald, DPM:

For sure. For sure.

Tyson E. Franklin:

Okay. Number 18, getting around getting around your website and where you post the latest news. You can have a video explaining where you have different things on your website, and you might have a section that's a blog article or a news section, and you can explain what you put there and why you post certain items there. And it could be updates about the clinic, the latest news. So your patients know if they haven't seen you for six months, might come to your website.

Tyson E. Franklin:

They might go to the latest news first just to find out what's actually happening or if there's been any changes.

Jim McDannald, DPM:

That makes a lot of sense. It's kinda like the... It's talked about the tutorial previously. Just give them the lay of the land and make them feel comfortable.

Tyson E. Franklin:

So number 19 was introduce team members, which I'm sure people have done this. But instead of just having a photo there of a team member, why not have a video there of the team member so that you get a bit of a spiel underneath, but then it's actually them talking. So So if I was booking in to see Jim for the first time and I actually got to see Jim talk and say, hi. I'm Big Jim Mac and you'll be seeing me today. And I'll tell you all about why they call me Big Jim Mac when you come in and see me.

Tyson E. Franklin:

But if I had made the appointment with Jim, actually seeing Jim talking and knowing, oh, Jim speaks English. Jim doesn't have an accent. Jim's clear... Looks really professional and sounds professional. Okay and then when I walk in there I'd feel like I know you just that little bit more.

Jim McDannald, DPM:

I think that familiarity is really really important. Like I said the kind of like guiding someone in with a video about how to get into the practice but then also giving a sense of who the physician or the provider is that they're going to see just gives a certain level of trust building that you can do. You can start that relationship before they even walk through the door so that they kind of have a general idea of who this person's gonna be and what to expect.

Tyson E. Franklin:

And if Jim... And when I said before, yeah, Jim doesn't have an accent. Even if you did have an at least I know I I know you have an accent before I come in. It's just one of those things, especially especially if you have a sexy accent, Jim.

Jim McDannald, DPM:

Big Jim Mac.

Tyson E. Franklin:

Big Jim Mac. Oh, you might be French. You know, my name is Jimmy Mac. So it's it's one of those things that I think... I I like seeing videos of people regardless of where they're from, you but get to see a little bit who they are, and it might explain a bit about themselves.

Tyson E. Franklin:

I don't know. I don't... It puts a bit of a smile on my face, but, yeah, maybe I'm just weird. I don't know.

Jim McDannald, DPM:

It's it's also one those things where you and I have, like, hundreds of videos, like, online. So we're pretty used to to seeing ourselves out there whether we like to or not.

Tyson E. Franklin:

So Yeah. That's it. Yeah. Just shoot another video of us. But the 20 thing I've got here is show them around your whole clinic.

Tyson E. Franklin:

Sometimes patients only ever see the reception area and the treatment room that they go into. They are totally unaware of all these other rooms. So you can show them your staff room where you where you like to relax and rejuvenate and get to get your energy back. Other rooms that might just be interesting. We used to have in our old clinic an iPad station where around the corner from the reception, we had a couple of iPads set up with with games on there.

Tyson E. Franklin:

So kids and some adults would sit in there waiting for their appointment and they would play games. Not saying that I was on there much, but they would be in there playing games. But it's it's one of those things. Whenever I've had people just recently come into the clinic, yeah, into the old clinic, and when they actually walk around it, they go, my god, this place is big. Did not realize how many rooms and how big this clinic was.

Tyson E. Franklin:

And I used to actually take I used to take patients where we had our milling machine set up. I would actually take patients in there and show them when the milling machine was on. I'd let them go and have a look at it, And they were amazed. And that was one of the videos we end up shooting was how a milling machine, how we set it up, how the orthotics were milled, and that just blew patients away with that technology.

Jim McDannald, DPM:

Yeah. The behind the scenes stuff can be pretty powerful.

Tyson E. Franklin:

And the last one I've got here is you might shoot a video of you putting up your Christmas tree or decorating your clinic, getting ready for that that Christmas period if you celebrate Christmas. But if there's any other events, whenever the Olympics were on, we used to do the clinic up with different decorations. If it was Commonwealth Games, if it was the Olympic Games, especially Olympic Games, and we used to have a big tally score... Tally board on one of our main doors that you can see from the reception. And we'd always put, like, Australia, USA, for example, and we put New Zealand because it was always funny because New Zealand doesn't win many gold medals.

Tyson E. Franklin:

So it'd always just be fun because every time you got Kiwis, if you had Kiwi patients coming in, we would joke around and we'd go, oh, let's have a look at the tally board and see where New Zealand's at. And, oh, they've got a bronze. Good on you, New Zealand. And... But you have fun with it.

Tyson E. Franklin:

And even though you might think, why don't we just shoot a video of you putting up Christmas decorations? Why not? If you've got your team there and you're putting the tree up and you're putting decorations and you take video and then speed it up and then you put it out there... And one thing, these videos, these are not always videos that they're gonna be on your website. These are videos that you will use.

Tyson E. Franklin:

You might have a YouTube channel. You might put them on Facebook. You might put them on Instagram. There may be different places that use different videos for different reasons. So leading through that Christmas period, putting up a video of your Christmas tree on your social media pages saying, hey, we...

Tyson E. Franklin:

The clinic's now getting prepared for Christmas. Looking forward to seeing you before the break. We're gonna be closing on this date. Makes total sense. Posting it in January makes no sense.

Jim McDannald, DPM:

Everything everything has its time, and you have to have the right context. So that's a that's a great point there.

Tyson E. Franklin:

So to me, it it... In the end, it's one of those things like, is it you could add to this list easily. These are the type of ideas you sit down with your team and you have some fun. What else could we shoot a video on that has nothing really to do with podiatry but everything to do with our podiatry business? And just and just brainstorm on these ideas.

Tyson E. Franklin:

And I tell you, you'll have a lot of fun doing it.

Jim McDannald, DPM:

No. This is great when I really... I I definitely could see where there can be a lot of value for the the clinics that listen to this podcast and and shooting some of those videos. And like I said, finding the right places to put them, but I definitely definitely enjoyed this one.

Tyson E. Franklin:

Okay, Big Jim. That's all I wanted to talk about today. It was videos outside of podiatry that still relate to your business. And if people have got any other ideas, please email them through to us. Just tell us some of your ideas.

Tyson E. Franklin:

If you've got something that is, yeah, a little bit different, send them through to us. What... What's the best email address, Jim?

Jim McDannald, DPM:

Yeah. They can just either go to the website podiatry.marketing. There's a form they can fill there, or they can reach out to me at Jim@PodiatryGrowth.com, and I'm sure they can email you as well if they choose to.

Tyson E. Franklin:

Yeah. Yes. Tf@TysonFranklin.com. Send us through your ideas, and we might highlight them in another another episode down the track.

Jim McDannald, DPM:

That'd be a lot of fun.

Tyson E. Franklin:

Okay, big Jim. That's it for me. I look forward to talking to next week.

Jim McDannald, DPM:

Sounds great, Tyson.

Tyson E. Franklin:

Okay. See you later. Bye now.
